Assessment of a Molten Salt Heat Transfer Fluid in a Parabolic Trough Solar Field
نویسندگان
چکیده
An evaluation was carried out to investigate the feasibility of utilizing a molten salt as the heat transfer fluid (HTF) and for thermal storage in a parabolic trough solar field to improve system performance and to reduce the levelized electricity cost. The operating SEGS1 plants currently use a high temperature synthetic oil consisting of a eutectic mixture of biphenyl/diphenyl oxide. The scope of this investigation included examination of known critical issues, postulating solutions or possible approaches where potential problems existed, and the quantification of performance and electricity cost using preliminary cost inputs. The two leading candidates were the so-called solar salt (a binary salt consisting of 60% NaNO3 and 40% KNO3) and a salt sold commercially as HitecXL (a ternary salt consisting of 48% Ca(NO3)2, 7% NaNO3, and 45% KNO3). Assuming a 2-tank storage system and a maximum operation temperature of 450°C, the evaluation showed that the levelized electricity cost can be reduced by 14.2% compared to a state-of-the-art parabolic trough plant, such as the SEGS plants in California. If higher temperatures are possible, the improvement may be as high as 17.6%. Thermocline salt storage systems offer even greater benefits. 1 Solar Electric Generating Systems located in Mojave Desert, California.

متن کاملConcentrating Solar Power
DESCRIPTION Concentrating Solar Power (CSP), also referred to as solar thermal power, uses mirrors to concentrate the sun's rays to heat a fluid that is then used to generate electricity, often using conventional steam turbines. There are three primary CSP technologies: parabolic trough, solar tower, and dish engine. The most common CSP system is the parabolic trough, which uses curved mirrors ...

In this work, we simulate the efficiency of different Heat Transfer Fluids (HTF) and molten salts when circulating through a section of Heat Collecting Elements (HCE) in a parabolic trough system for Concentrating Solar Power (CSP). The simulation shows that the Therminol VP-1 and Dowtherm A synthetic oils are the most efficient in the solar field due to their broad range of working temperature...
متن کاملA Novel Modeling of Molten-Salt Heat Storage Systems in Thermal Solar Power Plants
Many thermal solar power plants use thermal oil as heat transfer fluid, and molten salts as thermal energy storage. Oil absorbs energy from sun light, and transfers it to a water-steam cycle across heat exchangers, to be converted into electric energy by means of a turbogenerator, or to be stored in a thermal energy storage system so that it can be later transferred to the water-steam cycle. Th...
